Blocked toilet: what to try before calling a plumber
AI illustration
In short
Stop flushing, then use a flange plunger with firm push-pull strokes for about a minute. Hot (not boiling) water with dish soap can help soften soft blockages. If the water still does not drain, or other drains in the house are slow too, the blockage is deeper and needs a plumber, usually RM120–250.
Try this first
- Stop flushing so the bowl does not overflow.
- Use a flange plunger (the type with a rubber sleeve) and seal it over the outlet.
- Push and pull firmly 15–20 times, then check if the water drains.
- For soft blockages, pour in some dish soap and a bucket of hot tap water, wait 15 minutes, and try again.
Do not
- Do not pour boiling water; it can crack the bowl.
- Do not use strong caustic drain cleaners; they rarely clear toilets and make the job dangerous.
- Do not poke with wire hangers; they scratch the bowl.
Call a plumber when
- Plunging does not work after two or three tries
- The floor trap or shower drain also backs up
- A toy, phone or solid object has been flushed
- It blocks again within days
