Low water pressure at home: what causes it and how to fix it

Low water pressure at home: what causes it and how to fix itAI illustration
In short

First check whether one tap or the whole house is weak. One tap usually means a clogged aerator, filter or valve. A whole house problem points to a part-closed main valve, a slow roof tank ball valve, a faulty pump, a hidden leak or a supply issue in your area.

One tap or the whole house?

  • One tap or shower: unscrew and clean the aerator or shower head (a vinegar soak removes scale), and check the small angle valve under the sink is fully open.
  • Whole house: ask your neighbours or condo group whether they are affected too. If they are, it is likely a supply or building issue, not your pipes.

Checks inside your home

  1. Make sure the main valve near the meter and any internal valves are fully open.
  2. Clean any inline water filter; a clogged cartridge cuts flow to the whole house.
  3. Look in the roof tank. If it fills slowly or stays low, the ball (float) valve may be stuck or the inlet partly blocked. See water tank cleaning and replacement.
  4. If you have a pump, listen for it cycling on and off or running without water. A worn pressure switch or pump is a common cause.
  5. Rule out a hidden leak with a meter test.

Supply issues from Air Selangor

Scheduled works, pipe bursts and treatment plant problems can lower pressure across an area. Check Air Selangor's official website, app and social media for disruption notices before calling a plumber.

When a booster pump helps

A booster pump helps when the supply to your taps is steady but too weak, for example from a low roof tank to an upstairs shower. Under SPAN's Water Reticulation and Plumbing Rules 2014, you may not install a pump that affects the pressure from the public main unless a suction tank is fitted upstream of the pump, so a home pump should draw from your storage tank, never directly from the main. See water pump installation.

Condo and apartment rules

In most condos water goes through the building's tanks and pumps, which management maintains. Report building-wide low pressure to your JMB or MC. Before adding a pump or changing pipes in your unit, get written approval from management and check your building's by-laws.

Questions people ask us

Can I connect a pump directly to the Air Selangor pipe?

No. SPAN's plumbing rules do not allow a pump that affects the public main's pressure unless a suction tank is installed upstream. Pump from your storage tank.

Why is only my hot shower weak?

Often the water heater's inlet filter or the shower head is clogged with scale, or the mixer valve is faulty. Clean the head first, then ask a plumber.

My neighbours have the same low pressure. What should I do?

Check Air Selangor's notices for your area. In a condo, report it to management, since the building's tanks and pumps may be the cause.
