Why does my water heater keep tripping?

In short
A water heater that trips the breaker or ELCB usually has a burnt heating element, water inside the unit, or a weak earth connection. Switch it off at the breaker and do not keep resetting it. An electrician checks the wiring and a plumber handles any leak; between them they test the element and wiring. Most repairs cost RM100–250 plus parts.
Common causes
- Burnt or leaking heating element: the most common cause in older instant heaters.
- Water inside the casing: from a leaking inlet joint or cracked tank.
- Weak or missing earth: the ELCB trips as a safety response.
- Undersized wiring or breaker: common when a heater is added to an old point.
What you can safely do
- Switch off the heater's breaker and leave it off.
- Check for water dripping from the unit or its pipes.
- Note when it trips: at switch-on, after a few minutes, or only when the shower runs.
- Send a photo of the heater's label and the trip pattern to the plumber.
Do not
- Do not keep resetting the breaker.
- Do not open the heater casing yourself.
Questions people ask us
Is it safe to shower if the heater only trips sometimes?
No. A heater that trips intermittently can have a live fault. Leave it off until it has been tested.
Repair or replace?
If the heater is over 8–10 years old or the tank is leaking, replacing it is usually better value than repairing the element.
